About “KUMIKO”
KUMIKO (組子) is a traditional Japanese craft with no single nail is used to make beautiful patterns. The pattern is created by crafting artisans assembling the wooden piece one by one. KUMIKO skill is said to have originated in the early EDO period (17th century), when the technique was introduced by high-skilled artisans from all over the country for the construction of the Nikko Toshogu shrine (日光東照宮) assembled by then-Shogun Tokugawa family.
More than 400 years later, the techniques handed down from the craftsmen of the early 17th century are still being used.
